BOWLING.

TOURNAMENT IN VIEW. NEW SCHEME IN WELLINGTON. (By TRUNDLER). Last week was enlivened by the numerous club tournaments on Anniversary Day, played under ideal summer conditions, and good progress was made in the ordinary club matches and championships on Saturday. To-day opens a very quiet week in bowling, but next Saturday there will commence the preparations for a feast of bowling, second only in importance to the recent Dominion tournament. On that day the competitors in the first Rotorua tournament will have to leave for the Hot Lakes, to enjoy what most of them regard as the best outing in New Zealand. It takes nearly all the week, being needlessly drawn out by the system of planning for a bye in every round. On the following Monday there will commence the annual tournament at Tauranga, and also at Hamilton the first tournament under which a centre may hold a North Island tournament during the season that the Dominion tournament is in the South Island. In the last week of the-month, commencing on Monday, February 22, there will be the second Rotorua tournament, and competitors are hoping to return in time for the sixth round in the pennant and four-rink championships on Saturday, February 27. Early in March there will be the pairs tournament and the champion of champions, so that bowlers are assured of plentjof excitement for the next six or seven weeks. Burning, a Bowl. Somebody once told us that there is nothing new tinder the sun, but there was something decidedly new in ' the circumstances under which a bowl was burned during the tournament at Carlton last Friday. The secretary of the club, Mr. W. "E. Arey, put his bowls oh the bank after one round, and in a few minutes he heard a startling call that they were on fire. True enough, a young Ngauruhoe had broken out, for they were burning and smoking fiercely. The owner soon separated his Excelites, but not in time to prevent one of them being severely ecarred, and the other one having a nasty hole burned out of it. The competitors crowded round, and the general conclusion was that some player, in his scrupulous care to avoid throwing a match on the green, had thrown it on the bank, and it had fallen between the two bowls, which were touching each other. Of course there was a lot of argument about it, but Dr. Hardie Neil, who was in the professorial team which competed as representatives of the parent club of the city, settled it l>7 gravely stating that both the bowls were "burned." What the learned medico probably had in his mind was not altogether the technical burning in a bowling sense, but that the unexpected conflagration had been occasioned by bowls of an inflammable material being exposed during a prolonged period of maximum 'solar radiation, superinducing a natural predilection to spontaneous combustion, accelerated by direct contact with an ignited lucifer. Club Tournaments. It is rather strange, after all the attempts in Wellington to get rid of the pairs at the Dominion tournament, that they have had to institute a similar competition in their own centre. At their monthly meeting last week, the centre received an application from Hataitai, Lyall Bay and Seatown Clubs, asking for permission to hold their usual Eaetern Suburbs tournament at Easter. The application was declined in favour of a centre pairs tournament. A point on which Auckland could learn a useful lesson from Wellington over this incident is that our clubs are allowed to hold tournaments in far too loose a fashion, getting permission or not, just according to their own sweet will. The result is needless clashing, no less than four clubs holding tournaments this season without permission on dates for which other clubs had previously received permission. We all like liberty, but when liberty ignores or flouts constituted authority, it is surely time that something was done. Clubs cannot very well consult the centre in Auckland as they do in Wellington; for our centre only meets once every few months, but they can certainly consult the centre executive, which meets every few weeks. Unless the Dominion Council adopted a suggestion from Auckland, to alter the constitution by bringing in the above provision, it would be as -well to incorporate something to that effect in our own local rules. Of course, there are always a lot of people who say there are too many rules, but the rule already exists, although in an unworkable form, and if it were altered as suggested it would no longer be possible for those clubs who act in an unconstitutional way to get an advantage over those who act constitutionally. In fact, the same applies to all rules, and there were grave complaints ■at Dunedin that laxity in this connection was really a premium to those who break the' rules. Mr. Meadowcroft mentioned this at last week's meeting of the Wellington centre, and hoped that there would be no sucn laxity in future. It was apparently caused by the presence of the British bowlers, who play under slightly different rules, so that the umpires could not very well enforce rules against one lot of competitors, while waiving them against the others. This is certainly a strong argument in favour of forming an International Board, for it seems absurd that in a same which is only played within the British Empire there should be a different.set of rules for each country. Apparently it is just starting in also, and that will mean still another set of rules, unless we get in first, and. standardise them for the whole world. Mount Albert are holding- a tournament on Wednesday of next week, and on the two following days Epsom are holding a two-day tournament. The Denison Pins again changed hands last Wednesday, when a Carlton team, T. Mitchell. J." Cook. G. Wrightson and G. R. Hosking, defeated "the Dominion Road holders, T. A. Gentles. W. Battersby, W. Denison and T. West' This week's challenge is from I. \y. Turner (Mount Edeni. and the winners will have to meet W. J. Wallace (Remuera) next week. NIGHT TOURNAMENT. POXSONBY CLUB. SATURDAY'S GAMES. On Saturday there were no pennant or four-rink championship competitions, but the bowlers had a good afternoon out with club events, and on the North Shore grounds, a marine tournament was played between the Devonport, Stanley. Waitemata. and Takapuna clubs. " AVaitemata defeated Stanley by four games to two, and Devonport defeated Takapuna by two games to one, the fourth being drawn. CLUB MATCHES. r.VRI/rON GREEN.
