OBITUARY.
MR. CHARLES BARTLEY. SEVENTY YEARS RESIDENT. An old resident of Auckland, Mr. Charles Bartley. died on Sunday, aged 70 year?. He was a son of the late Mr. Robert Bartley of Devonport, who came to Auckland in 18.34, by the ship Jeseph Fletcher, and a brother of Mr. Clement Bartley, of Auckland Savings Bank. Deceased spent his whole life in Auckland and had thus seen it grow from a very small town. He was a builder by trade and recognised aa one who took pride in turning out a pood job. Upon his marriage, to a daughter of the late Mr. Thomas (fee, Mr. Bartley went to live in Richmond Road, Ponsonby, where lie remained until the last few years, when he removed to Matai Road. Greenlane. Mrs. Bartley survives her husband. Then , is one son, also two niarried daughters. The funeral, which was private, took place at Waikumete this afternoon. DR. ROBERT STOPFORD. News was received by cable yesterday from his son of the- death of a highly popular and also much respected medical practitioner. Dr. Robert Stopford. at the age of 04 years. Dr. Stopford practised for some time in Auckland, and for a short term was a member of the City Council. Dr. Stopford"s specialty was maternity work. He qualified for that branch of his profession at the Rotunda Lying-in Hospital. Dublin. He was at one time port medical officer at Perim Island in the Ked Sea. While there he gained a tolerable command of Arabic. He was also a great Latin student. For a number of years Dr. Scopford had a good practice at the fashionable seaside resort of Southport, in the North of England. From there lie migrated to Launceston, in Tasmania, and came to Auckland about 1902. Dr. Stopford was very popular while he resided in Auckland. He had a breezy genial manner that had the effect of raising the spirits of his patients. He was especially popular amongst the working men. Dr. Stopford made a point of never suing for his fees. He left Auckland with his family about 1912. and had resided ever since at Balmain. Sydney. He- was for some years a member of the late New South Wales liovernment. Dr. Stopford was a great advocate of child welfare, and was known in Balmain as the "king of the kids." Dr. Stopford is survived by his wifp. oiip son. Mr. Adrian Stopford. end two daughters. One daughter is the wife of Dr. Feather, of Queensland. Dr. Stopford belonged to the MasonicCraft, and was a member of the local Pacific Club. He was a great fancier of dogs and fast ponies.
