MARRIED WOMEN TEACHERS. PROTEST BY AUCKLAND BOARD. SL'ITORT FROM OTAGO. (Py Tele=.-apli.—Special to -Star.") DUNF-DIX", this day. At a meeting of the Otago Education Board a letter was received from tho Auckland Education Board, which \vrot_ tliat. under tiie Act and regulations married women stood upon tiie same footing exactly as ail other teachers in regard to employment, and the Board was of opinion that this position .should be altered. It held that, in general, a married woman should be .-upported br her husband, and should not enter into competition for employment with singla teacher.*. The Auckland Board forwarded a list of six ea.-e- in that district where husband and wife were both employed under tliat Board. There were also cases where a woman teacher was employed whose husband was in a strong financial position, but not in that Board's service. The co-operation and support of other Boards was requested to have the law amended in the direction of empowering boards to exercise their discretion in reference to the appointment of married female teachers, and to decide each application on its merits. •The chairman l Mr. Wallace*, stated t'nat they had never made any secret of the fact that where a married woman teacher could be supported by her husband she should leave the service. It was decided that the Board support the Auckland proposals.
