-• —— ANNUAL CONFERENCE. APPRECIATION OF DIPLOMA. (By Telegrnph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN. this day. The Midsummer Conference of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture was opened to-day. Mr. F. .T. Nathan (Palmerston North) presiding. The Mayor (Mr. Tapley) welcomed the delegates. The president gave a brief review of the history of the establishment of the Institute, the object of which was to encourage every branch of horticulture, including forestry and agriculture. He stressed the economic value of horticulture and the need for education. The report of the executive stated that over one hundred applications had been received from professional and amateur horticulturists for the diploma. These were from men over the age of 40. There would be a greatly increased number as scon as the conditions for men under 40 were announced, and there would be no lack of students as soon as standards, had been set regarding theory and ihe practical pass needed. A remit was carried tiiat a New Zealand National Botanic Garden should be established.
