Godfrey, represented Captain Ritchie, and had associated with him officers of the ship. Mr. A. G. Luiin, president of the league welcomed the visitors. Ho stated that they had watched the progress of the Diomede on its voyage to the furthest flung outpost of the British Empire and he would assure the officers and men that although 13,000 miles separated them from their homes, the keen spirit of the Xew Zealanders was more akin to the Homeland than could be claimed by any other Dominion. He mentioned that the girls' branch of the league was arranging another dance for the men who were not able to obtain leave for the present function. Mr. G. Baildon, Mayor of Auckland, also tendered a welcome to the men on behalf of the citizens. Commander Godfrey made suitable reply. Dancing occupied the major portion of the evening, and as over 200 ladies were present, the men were not at a loss for partners.
