LAWN TENNIS.

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. SECOND DAY'S PLAY. MANY QUICK VICTORIES. Good progress was made to-day in the opening rounds of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual provincial championship meeting. The secretary (Mr. M. E. Ward) and two members of the committee (Messrs. F. J. Ohlson and C. C. Chalmers ) worked hard throughout the morning in arranging matches between the limited number of players available, and, as a result of their efforts, despite the fact that it is not a holiday, the nine courts were kept occupied without, a break. Players were in good spirits, the weather holding fine, with •brilliant sunshine, and competition was keen throughout the forenoon. The courts, which have been specially propared for the tournament, were in good order, and played very fast. A light wind made conditions ideal. It is hoped that, with good weather, the tournament will conclude on Saturday, alhough, at the present rate of progress, the committee will do very well to get the finals finished by six o'clock on Saturday evening. Anticipating thirsty weather, tho committee made special arrangements for the comfort of competitors, and a tent has been provided where lemon squash and barley water is dispensed to players without, charge. Several decisive and easy two-set victories were obtained in the first and second rounds of the men's singles. AW. Sims, who has not been playing during the last few months, met F. R. ( hisholm. and. playing steadily, he outdrove his less experienced opponent, winning the match with the loss of onlytwo games. Lampe had little difficulty in disposing of Partridge, his superior speed and accuracy giving him an easy win, C—o. C—3. N. Sturt. who won the Auckland handicap singles so brilliantly, was in good form when he met D. G. McFarlane. Occasionally the lastnamed madci Sturt show flashes of his best form, but the top player on the junior ladder was too fast throughout, and won comfortably, 6—l, ti—2. E. Smythe settled down to a harddriving game against M. Robb in the first round, and had the match well in hand all the way, winning o—l,0 —1, o—l.0 —1. The first match of the tournament to run to three sets was contested by two experienced tournament players in E. Ohlson and T. E. Clark. The pair were on the court for over an hour and a-half. In the first set Ohlson played very strongly and won without the loss of a game. In the second set the pace began to tell, and many of his returns were short. Clark, who was serving well, played a baseline game, and took the set, 4 —6. There were several long rallies in the third set, but Ohlson was the more sure, and profited by his opponent's mistakes, to win, 6—3. Misses Knight and Colebrook proved too strong for Misses Sharpe and Potter in the second round of the doubles. The winning pair made few mistakes in the first set, taking it o—2, and in the second they played a safe, steady game, making some nice placements. They took this", o—3. R. B. Hardy went down to A. C. Johns rather easily in the second round. Johns led 4—l, but failed to capture, his opponent's service in the sixth game. In the second it was even pegging to the fifth game, which Johns won after deuce, and the next three games he took with ease, driving Hardy out of the court. Nicholson gave Griffiths the best fljrht of the morning in the third round. They were level at the sixth game, and deuce was called twice in each of the two games following, Griffiths taking them both. The champion is in good form, and made few mistakes, taking the set t>—l. Nicholson became steadier in the second and led 4 —2. Then Griffiths began to drive very accurately, and got everything hack, to equal at the eighth game. Nicholson took the next for the loss of only two points, hut the champion came strongly in the three final games, being very safe overhead, and he won 7—5 in a style that delighted his supporters. Chalmers and Warsaw made a threeset fight of their game in the first round. | Chalmers dropping the first. They had many rallies in the two following sets, deuce being called two or three times in many of the games. Chalmers, who has improved since the handicap tournament at Christmas, was successful in placing many of his shots in difficult corners and had his opponent running. He took the last two sets 7 —5. 7 —5. The champion, E. YV. Griffiths, met A. Christmas in the second round of the sinarles. and played very steadily, to win C —l. o—l.0 —1. Christmas compelled his opponent to produce some of his best shots. A great fight ensued in the first set of E. L. Bartleet's match against Richardson, the last-named actually leading 7 —o, and S—7. He could not capture Bartleet's service, however, and lost the set S—lo. Bartleet placed his shots to better advantage in the second set. and put more pace on his drives to win 6—_.
