ENGINE AND LORRY COLLIDE.
LEVEL CROSSING MISHAP, j VEHICLE BADLY DAMAGED. DRIVER ESCAPES LIGHTLY. (By Telegraph.—t'reis Association.) HAMILTON, this day. i ■' - - h A very narrow escape from a serious, 1 1 and probably a fatal accident, occurred at Seddon Road level crossing during the j height of the gale yesterday. A large : International motor lorry belonging toK A. M. Bisloy and Co.. produce merchants, I and ' driven by Mr. O. Hall, had i approached within a few yards of the crossing when a train suddenly appeared ( from the Frarikton side. The driver ) jammed on his brakes quickly, in the hope of pulling up, but this act merely . had the effect of retarding speed, and j; really hindering instead of helping him, (' for the lorry had passed nearly over the . line when the engine struck the back ; wheel of the lorry, throwing the vehicle , to the far side of • the road, almost ' against the cattle stops, and turned it . completely around. The driver found himself lying oh the' . step, of the lorry, but apart from a ; severe shaking he escaped injury. ■ The vehicle was damaged to the extent of about £150, which-is covered, by a }•; comprehensive policy in the Alliance ; Company. Seddon ' Road ' crossing is the . most dangerous in the town. On the Frank- j ton side the view of the line is obscured ; by houses, and as there is no bell mdi- ; cator there it is an ever-present danger.
