OBITUARY.

DR. ROBERT BELL. (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, January 22. The death has occurred of Dr. Robert I Bell, the noted cancer authority. His death recalls the conflict with high authorities on cancer treatment, which led to his suing the British Medical Council in 1912 for an article in the "Medical Journal" entitled "Cancer, Credulity and Quackery." He was awarded' £2000 damages.— (A. and N.Z.) LORD CARMICHAEL. LONDON, January 22. The death occurred this week of Lord Carmichael of Skirling, in his 67th year. The funeral took place in the oldworld churchyard at Skirling. It was a very simple ceremony. The oaken coffin was carried from the late peer's home to the graveside by a party of villagers. Mourners included Viscount Novar, a former Secretary for Scotland.—(A. and N.Z. Cable.). Thomas David Gibson-Carmichael, first Baron of Skirling, was raised to the peerage in 1912. He was born at Edinburgh in March, 1859, and was educated' at St. John's College, Cambridge. He was private secretary to Sir George Trevelyan and Lord Dalhousie when they were Secretaries for Scotland, and he represented in the House of Commons from 1895 to 1900, succeeding Mr. Gladstone. From 1908 to 1911 he was Governor of Victoria, and afterwards Governor of Madras and of BengaL His heir is Sir Henry GibEon-Craie, Bart.' •' c
