RUGBY FOOTBALL.
By the death, on November "2.3 of Mr. William Cail, English Rugby football lost one of its greatest men in the history of the game. He held the position of honorary treasurer of the English Rugby Union from 1594 until •June, 1924. Mr. G. Rowland Hill, go well known as honorary secretary of the Rugby Union for many years, afterwards" its president, and an intimate colleague of Mr. Cail, pays the following tribute: —'"He was one of the great pillars in fighting professionalism. Xo man rendered greater service than he did. His rugged indifference to any public opinion, his absolute and conspicuous honesty made him a man to be treated with confidence and respect by all those with whom he laboured. He was very blunt in putting forward his views, but .behind all this he never once showed any bitterness. He! was a splendid "man to work with; one felt when he put forth his views that if anyone differed from him he did not mind a bit.' He felt that he had done his duty." He did great work in Tespect to the finances of the Rugby Union, and it was really due to him that we ever bought Twickenham. On the International BoaTd he commanded the-profound respect of every member and of the other unions as well. He and I had. worked tojrether for a long number of years. Temperamentally we were strangely different. Time after time we* differed, but never had a single word of 111----1 will." ' "
