A METHODIST UNDERTAKING.
ESTIMATED COST OF £33,000
The recent proposal of the Methodist Church to erect a new Theological College in Auckland, has been carried a step further with the closing yesterday of the competition for designs for the college. The competition was confined to Xew Zealand architects, and the linal date brought in 22 entries.
The site chosen for the new collet is at the corner of Clrafton Road and Carlton Gore Road, it is proposed to erect the building in brick with stone facings, with ample accommodation for students, and a separate portion for use as a hostel for university students. There is also to be made provision for a Methodist Museum.
The estimated cost of the scheme, including furniture, is £35,000, towards which amount there is now in hand the sum of £11.000. It was proposed to launch the financial effort to raise the balance at the Duneclin Conference at Dunedin next month, and thereafter a canvass of the Dominion would be made. Professor Knight, the Revs. C. H. Laws, A. B. Chappell, E. Drake, and Messrs. F. L. Moodie, S. J. Ambury, and J. Stanton, will act as judges of the competition just closed. It is anticipated that the work of judging will occupy two weeks. The winning design will carry a prize of £450, the second £250, and the third £100.
