BUSINESS IN U.S.A.
STEEL PLANTS BUSY. €JHIEFLY DOMESTIC TRADE. Reporting on business conditions in the United States under date December 17, Messrs. Mailler and Pureau, of New York, write as follows:— "The report of the United States Steel Corporation for the month of November was a very general surprise, for it showed an increase of 470,000 tens. Some increase was anticipated, bus not nearly so much. Not only this company, font all other steel companies appear to be very prosperous, nnd many of them are running at full capacity. Prices are held firm, no concessions being mado in any line, while in a few some advances have taken place. The general feeling is that the coming year will be one of touch activity and a very great demand for everything -that is being produced. . Of course, the larger part of the output is for domestic purposes and running very heavily into such lines as rails railroad supplies, supplies for automobiles, structural steel and sheets. These demands are for domestic consumption, which has grown steadily (hiring the past two years. Export trade, however, has not been so good during the year, but there is some tendency to improvement, and the companies intimate that they intend to secure more of the export trade in the future and get into the market in more of a competitive way. Shipments to all parts of the woTld have been moderate, but some markets are increasing their ordeis, and it is hoped that there Will be a very general improvement in every direction. Shipments to Australia and New Zealand have not been very large recently, but we note more orders are coming in, and believe that the coming year will el.ow much greater a&s& i ?- eVer y linp of steel goods. o&thfc eV f 7 descri Ption thoughtiilii
