As the result of the introduction of the 44-hour week following on legislation by Parliament, prices of commodities are beginniag to rise. The price of bread will be increased next week, while milk is also to be dearer. The secretary of the Maste-r Bakers' Association stated that as large sums will have to be paid away for overtime and extra hands, a rise in the price of bread is inevitable. The same position arises in the milk industry, where extra hands will be required, and the extra cost will be passed on. The Government propofes to take over all private buses, owing to the greater cost of running the tramways, which are already a loss to the State from competition with the buses. Seamer. on coastal ships will come under the new hours. and shinfiint companies are announcing rises in the fares. Railway and tramway fares will also be raised to cover the additional cost and extra hands required.
