Mr. Zane Grey, Mr. C. Alma Baker, C.8.E., and party, left for Whangarei by the express this morning. Major J. Sheraton, of Proban's Horse, Indian Army, was a passenger by the Arawa, which arrived in Auckland this morning. He is visiting the Dominion on holiday. Staying at the Grand Hotel are Mr. R. H.'Waley (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. R. Xorton-Daughty, Mr. G. M. Stead, Mr. R. Brodie, Mr.. Mrs. and Miss Ritchie and Mr. Ran Walyyn. Rev. Father J. Garrahy arrived from Ireland by the Arawa to-day. He will proceed to Wellington, where he will join the clergy of one of the city churches. Among the guests staying at the Central Hotel are Mr. L. Carpenter (Taihape), Mr. and Mrs. E. Lewis, Mr. J. Gardner, Mr. Sookes (Taihape), and Mr. and Mrs. J. Henderson (England). Mr. L. Harris, of London, a senior parkier in the firm of Messrs. Bing. Harris and Co.. arrived- on the Arawa to-day, on on e of his periodical business trips to Xew Zealand. He will go south in a few days' time. Guests at the Star Hotel include Father P. J. Lagen (Opotiki), Father C. .J. Brodie (Gisborne), Father B. Krezemburgh (Gisborne, Mr. D. Brown (Xew Plymouth). Mr. E. H. Dethule (Wellington). Mr.. Mrs. and Miss W. S. Pearce (Wellington). A letter of congratulation to Sir Henry Brett upon receiving the honour of knighthood is to be forwarded from the Council of the Auckland Institute. In mentioning the matter at yesterday's meeting. Sir James Gunson.' the president, referred to the interest Sir Henry had taken in the museum over a very long series of years. Colonel A. Savile. late of the 31st Indian Lancers. India, arrived in Auckland by the Arawa this morning. Colonel Savile. who is accompanied by his wife, recently retired from the army after a period of service extending over 2;"> year*. He has come to Auckland to settle, and to indulge in yachting and fishing, to which sports he devotes time. A resident of Oisborne, Mr. Vin-e-.it Pyke. died last night at the age of 78 years. He was a well-known banker who. some years ago. retired from the service of the Bank of Xew Zealand. A son of the late Mr. Vincent Pyke. M.P., he was stationed for some years in the South Island .including Rakaia ;ind Core, and was for many years manager at Gisborne. He is survived by two sons and a daughter, f, Dr. .1. A. Clinch, of the Auckland Training College staff, has been absent on leave for the whole of last year to enable him to visit (Jreat Britain. His place was temporarily filled by the appointment of Mr. R. Falla. B.A. Mr. Binstead, who lectured chiefly in psychology, resigned in the middle of the year to lake up an appointment in Jiarotonga. His place was temporarily filled by the appointment of .Mr. 11. BeerofM.A.
