DR. AXHAM, AGED 86.
RESTORED TO PRACTICE. LONDON, January 20. The Royal College of Physicians has decided to terminate the suspension of Dr. Axham, aged S6. He was deprived of his right to practise in 1912 because he assisted Sir "Herbert A. Barker, the specialist in manipulative surgrery, by administering anaesthetics while the . former was operating. Dr. Axham's case aroused much discussion in the newspapers at the time, the public considering that he had been unjustly treated, especially as Sir Herbert subsequently received a knighthood. The effect of the decision is that Dr. Axham can now apply to the General Medical Council to have his name restored to the list of medical practitioners. : In an interview Dr. Axham said: "T am an old man now, but my last days will be made happier. I shall lodge an appeal immediately. I am longing now : to see some friends and colleagues whom I have not seen for many years." ! Sir Herbert Barker said: "Dr. Axham first came to see mc operate in 1905. He watched mc on 45 afternoons and then paid he was convinced it was ths d.t'y of a qualified man to administer anaesthetics for mc. He believed that what he did was a public duty, and never ! hesitated. He paid the penalty by the i loss of his professional status, which has lasted for 14 years."—(A. and N.Z.)
