DALMATIAN SETTLESRS.
iTo the Ediror.l Sir.—"Northlander" claims that the Dalmatians are letter workers than the Europeans, and that that is why they get the preferen?e on public works. This is contrary to fact. I have worked among Dalmatians for some considerable time, and I consider them a greater menace to the European worker than either the Chinamen or Hindoos in the country. In the North Auckland district hundreds of these lean limbed men. ranging between the ages of sixteen and sixty, are employed in preference to colonials, because they can be sat upon, and have not an ounce of backbone to stick out for their rights. A few of these Dalmatians will do an honest day's work, but very few if the boss is away. I have seen big ablebodied New Zealanders carrying their swags through the North Auckland district in the winter and unable to get work, but Dalmatians could come after them, and old men that could hardly stand up. could get a job. One of these men carrying his swag. I happened to know: he wa= an ex-SPrgeant-major in France: and that same man could eat any two Dalmatians that "Northlander" likes to bring along. •at toiling or otherwise, but he was never even given a chance to prove his worth. I fail to see how they are an asset to this country: and though they never did nor never will put mc out of a job, I think the Government of this country should foster their own kinsmen first.— T am, etc. NEW ZEALANDER.
