A SUMMER SCHOOL.

Teachers are widely envied for the length of their holidays. Possibly it does not occur to everybody that, by reason of nerve strain, a conscientious teacher needs more holidays than most workers, and, further, that many teachers give up portions of their holidays to study of one kind or another. The number of facilities provided for-

holiday study has increased of late years, and it is not impossible that this wellintentioned encouragement will be overdone. There is, of course, study and study. The summer school at Cambridge, which was opened to-day, is so pleasant in its locality and programme that so forbidding a word as study may be inappropriate. This weather a journalist would much rather write an editorial under a tree at Cambridge than in an office in the gully which —unfortunately, we may say at this time of the year— was chosen as the heart of the city. Provided that too much is not askdftof teachers, these Bummer schools' are excellent institutions. This Cambridge gathering i 3 bringing teachers from all over the North Island and lecturers from further afield. The "students" will be given instruction by experts on a wide range of subjects, in delightful surroundings, and we are sure little angularities and parochialisms will be removed pain-, lessly, and the outlook of all broadened with profit to themselves and their charges.
