MALE APPRENTICES.
I INCREASE IN WAGES. Apparently some employers have overlooked a recent amendment to the Api prentices Act, dated September 20, 1925, because the Labour Department has now drawn up a notice calling the attention of employers to the fact that all male apprentices working under awards who commenced their apprenticeship subsequent to April 1, 1922, and who were bound by the award in existence at the time they were apprenticed, are entitled from September 20, 1025, to any increase in wages which may be prescribed in any apprenticeship orders made before the latter date. In the case of apprentices in trades in which apprenticeship orders have been or may be made after that date, any increases will be payable as from the date of the order. In connection with the working of the Act the -Department of Labour receives applications from boys anxious to be apprenticed to a trade, and also receives applications from employers who require apprentices. At present the local office of the Department has the following applications from boy 3 desirous of being apprenticed: Bricklaying 5, carpentry 1(5, engineering (general) 8, electrical 8, motor 10, furniture 9, plastering 8, plumbing 18, printing 4, signwriting 3.
