CHAMPIONSHIPS CONCLUDED. TWO RECORDS ESTABLISHED. MISS E. CHAMPION'S GREAT RACE. The concluding events in connection with the Auckland championships were held in the Tepid Baths last evening, before an attendance of about 1500, and the night proved to be one of new records and excellent swimming. In the 150t yards men's backstroke test, L. Fairgray lowered his own New Zealand record of 1.56 4-5 by 4 l-os after a great race. In the 440 yards intermediate boys' test, G. Bridson covered the distance in 5.50 1-5, his previous- New Zealand record being 5 56 2-5. Bridsou completely outclassed his opponents, and won by nearly two lengths. Ills time is equal to that which has won New Zealand men's championship events over the same distance. The most popular and most deserved victory of the night went to Miss Kdna Champion, who won the 220 yards intermediate girls' test after a thrilling race. Her time, 3.0, was only 2 2-5e outside the New Zealand record. This young lady fought out a game battle, and her victory was greeted with cheering and applause, all those preeent rising to their feet as she shot in front of Miss M. Farquhar and won by one and a half yards. Miss P. Page registered an easy win in the 440 yards ladies' test, swimming with much judgment. As was expected, A. K. Baird annexed the 4-. yards men's test by four yards from Enwright, last year's holder, who gave a brilliant exposition. The other championship events were well fought out, and several Handicap events provided any amount or" Interest. The programme was decidedly well arranged, and once again the officials of the Auckland Centre are to be congratulated upon the running of their carnival, which, if anything, was more successful than that of Tuesday night. There was no hitch throughout, and the officials have every reason to feel satisfied that the public spent a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The results are as follow :— 440 YARDS MEN'S TEST (Auckland and New Zealand record, D. Pelham, 5.3S 3-5). E. A. Baird (Waitemata) 1 J. Enwright (Waitemata) '2 D. Pelham (WaUemata) 3 E, V. Cunnold (TTaitemata), A. D. Adamson (Waitemata), and M. Wilson (Parnell) also started. An excellent start saw them all together for half a length, when Enwright act the pace, and drew out to lead by two yards. Cunnold was riext, with Adamson, Pelham, Wilson, and Baird in that order. The same order ruled at the 100 yards. Going into the fourth lap, Wilson gave way to Baird, who joined Adameon and Cunnold, while Enwright still sustained his lead, closely followed by Pelham. On the fifth lap Enwright was still in front, while the remainder were together. TVilson withdrew in the next lap, and Cunnold and Baird swam into second place, with Pelham and Adamson handy. Enwright was magnificent, and continued to hold his advantage. Baird and Pelham were now racing together, and Cunnold and Adamson fought for third place. On the eighth lap excitement ran high as Baird challenged and came up to Enwright, with Pelham and Adamson also reducing the gap. Cunnold withdrew at this stag?. Two more laps saw Baird go ' to the front, with Enwright at his heels, and Adamson leading Pelham by inches. A wonderful finish saw Baird draw out, and. with steady, powerful strokes, forge ahead to win by four yards, with Pelham a yard away, third, and Adamson three yards away, fourth. Time, 5.415. 440 YARDS LADIES' TEST (Auckland and New Zealand record, MISs G. Snand, 6.8.) Miss Pirie Page (Waitemata) 1 Miss Jean Bell (Waitemata) 2 Miss E. Stockley also started, but withdrew on the ninth lap. From a beautiful start the three swimmers settled down, Miss Stockley holding a slight advantage over the first lap. The 100 yards saw Miss Bell assume the lead, with Miss Page and Miss Stockley swimming together a yard behind. The advantage was never with one or the. other until the eighth lap, i when Miss Page slowly but surely increased her lead. Tiring badly. Miss Stockley withdrew after the next lap. Miss Bell fought gamely to keep .pace with Miss Page, but the latter had got into her 6tride, arid increased her lead over each lap.
