It then clambered on to a roof, where it was latet shot by a farmer. The animal was brought home by a sailor about seven years a._b, when it was small. It was left in charge of the man's mother whUe the owner was at sea, and was kept chained up in a kitchen. Recently it had become very fierce. Mrs. Philips, who had charge of the chimpanzee, said she did not know what to do with it. as she could not afford to have it .destroyed. All her family were afraid to go near it, it was so strong. When she was feeding it the chain slipped from its neck and it darted off. A woman Uving two houses away was attacked and bitten, and' the chimpanzee then swung itslf on to the roofs of a block of houses, where it crouched, snarling and chattering at passers-by. A police inspector asked help from a neighbouring farmer, who shot the chimpanzee -with the only cartridge he possessed. The woman's wounds wre cauterised and Injections were made at the hospital.
