DROUGHT IN AMERICA.
RAIN COMES AT LAST.
MILLION PEOPLE RUINED.
AID FROM GOVERNMENT.
(By Cable—Press Association.—Copyright.)
(Received 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, December 10. The drought, -which threatened serious consequences in several States, ha 3 broken, after a series of heavy rainstorms, which have worked their way from the south along the Atlantic seaboard to the northern States, and hitting various mid-western centres, are now touching the Pacific coast, notably California, where they are accompanied by heavy fogs.
Florida received the heaviest rain for years, 14in falling in the Miami area within 12 hours.
New York and New England had five days' continuous rains, accompanied by winds.
The southern and northern storms did considerable damage, several lives being lost.
In Florida, property losses total millions of dollars. The effect, of the rain generally has been beneficial, but came too late. In many places the crops were ruined for lack of moisture.
Mr. Coolidge has been informed that 1,000,000 people are faced with starvation in North Georgia this winter unless the Government extends relief, the drought having caused wholesale failures of crops in 20 counties and partial failure in 12 others.— (A. afnd N.Z. Cable.)
