OBITUARY.
DR. J. S. VAUGHAN, D.D. i ' * ' — LONDON, December 7. The death has occurred of the Right Rev. John Stephen Vatighan, Roman Catholic Bishop of Sebastapolis, and Auxiliary to the Bishop of SalfOrd, aged and N.Z. Cable.) Dr. Vaughan had been Roman Catbolic Bishop of Sebastapolis since 1909, and Domestic Prelate to the Papal CoUrt since .1596. He was rector of St. Bede's College, Manchester, ffom 1912 to 1915. Born at Couftfield, Ross, ih January, 1853, he was educated at St. Gregory's College, Downside, Bath, at JMonte Cassiho, Italy, at the English College in Rome, and at Grand Seniinaire, Bttiges. He became a priest in 1876, and was for a time professor of mathematics at St. Bede's College. He travelled in Australia for three years, preaching, lecturing, and doing missionary work. On hia return to England he settled in Lond6n, where he undertook parochial work, first tinder Cardinal Manning and then Under his brother* Cardinal Vaughan. He was Canon of Westminster in 1898* and resided in Rome from* 1904-7. He theh Went to tHe United States and Canada on a preaching and lecturing -tour. Ih 1900 he was appointed Bishop of Manchester. He <iad published numerous religious works.
