FLOODS IN THE SOUTH.
« LARGE As& mUdkTEd. SAMAGX NEAR KAIAPOI. MANY CROPS RUINED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. With the melting nf snow on the ranges by north-westers, the volume oi water in the Waimakariri River increased considerably yesterday, and later in the afternoon the river burst its banks at Clarkvillp, near Kaiapoi, and flooded a large area of land. The river broke through a now protec- • tive bank which was erected last year | from White's Bridge to the Belfast | Hotel. The break in the banks was discovered by Mr. A. M. WilsoQ and his | son. The tremendous body of water | proved too strong for the two men, and they had to give up an attempt to save the district from flooding. ' About half-past four the water crossed the Main North Road, which was soon impassable. At five o'clock it was running over the decking of White's Bridge. an occurrence that has not happened for many years past. Between Belfast and Chaney's water lay on the Toad to a depth of three feet six inches. All farmers in the locality suffered severe losses through their ,hay beingswept away and their grass spoilt. Many crops have been ruined, hut stock was removed to high land. Early this morning the flood waters were subsiding.
