CHRISTMAS APPEALS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,-I wish to appeal to-the public on behalf of Major Gordon, whoC again through the generosity o f S friends of the poor and needy, to Z able to give out parcels of food to enable those who otherwise would hav»' .poor fare indeed to obtain a feast of good things at Chnstmas time. Major Gordon, the Samaritan officer of the Salvation" Army in this city, is too weh known to.require description beyond saying that-the-year now closing has been one of the most strenuous in her experience. The severity of the last winter revealed scores of families without blankets, and as a result of the magnificent effort of the Commercial Travellers, the major was-enabled to distribute four hundred pairs, which brought comfort to so many, and this in addifon to the multitudinous duties! which also comprises that of probation! ary officer for the Auckland district, La 8 " been a severe task, and taxed the strength of.herself and her assistantEnsign Thackwell. It is pleasing to know that the Army authorities have recognised her labour , during the year, in her promotion to the Tank p{ "maior." The major distributed two hundred and fifty parcels of food/last yea are evidences that more will be required this. I shall be pleased to aeknowlectee contributions which will be carefully expended to benefit the most needy.
