THE LATE MR. W. J. NAPIER.
SERVICE AT CATHEDRAL.
A requiem mass was celebrated yesterday at St. Patrick's Catholic. Cathedral by the" Rev. Father Buckley, prior to the interment of the remains of the late Mr. W. J. Napier at Hillsboro' Cemetery. A large number of friends of the deceased were -present at the mass, also representatives of various bodies with which deceased had been associated. The Auckland Harbour Board was represented by the chairmanMr. H. R. Mackenzie, and the secretary, Mr. Burnett; Captain Duder, a former harbour- master, was also present, and Mr. Robert Farrell, one time member of the Harbour Board. Mr. T. Lamont, Mayor, represented Devonport Borough Council. The Auckland Law Society was represented by the president, Mr. A. H. Johnstone, Messrs R. M. McVeagh J. Alexander, F. H. G West, J. H. Luxford and other members of the profession. The English Speaking Union was represented by Mr. Vernier Walle, a . nd member s of the committee; the Victoria League executive by Mr Lind Mitchell, Mr. H. T. Goldie and Mr. W. J. Crowther; the Navy' League executive by Mr. H. T. Goldie and Mr W J. Crowther. The North Shore Cricket Club, of which Mr. Napier had been vice-president for many years, was represented by Mr. G. Jackson, and the Orphans' Club by Messrs. P. Howden and J. Crawford, secretary.
Many beautiful wreaths were forwarded from private friends, and the many local bodies with which Mr. Napier had been connected. The service at the graveside was conducted by Father Buckley and Father Furlong, of Devonport.
The two sons of deceased were the chief mourners.
The members of the legal profession will attend at the Supremf C _urtfa.lo a.m. to-morrow (Wednesday) to nay a tribute to the memory of'the late Mr vv. J. Isapier.
VWien the patron of the South African "Veterans' Association, Sir Charles Fergusson, visited Taranaki recently he was entertained by the branch, who, during the function, presented h.m with a tin of "bully beef" in remembrance of campaigning days. His Excellency entered heartily into the spirit of the joke, and said that he would keep it in memory of his visit to the South African veterans of New Plymouth, and he took it home under his arm. Another pleasing incident during the meeting was the presentation of a silver tea set to Mr. J., dc Launay, who was leaving the district. Lady Fergusson made the presentation on behalf of the member., of the Taranaki association. Mr. de Launay has since taken up residence in Wellington.
