TROTTING.
WHEEL AND SADDLE NOTES. (BY ORION.) FIXTURES FOR THE SEASON. tiecember s—Waikato Trotting- Club. December 12, 16—New Brighton Trotting December 26—Gore Trotting Club. December 26—Asnburton Trotting-. Club. December 26, 28—Westport Trotting Club. December 26, 2S—South AVairarapa Trotting Club. December.2B, 30, 31—Auckland Trotting Club. That good pacer, Away, is still causing his trainer some anxiety, and the chances are he will have to .be spelled. Acceptances for all events at the Waikato Trotting Club's meeting, which is to be held on Saturday, close to-day at 5 p.m. A. Fleming has not given up hope of getting another race or two out of Don Wild, and he has the free-legged pacer going along satisfactorily at Addington. Although Some Jazz won a race at Nelson, Mr. F. vV. Edwards did not think the performance warranted him rehandicapping the trotter for the Waikato meeting. The mile and a-half pacing record for the Dominioni is 3.17, registered by Logan Chief at Wellington in April last. This record Onyx will endeavour to reduce at the New Brighton summer meeting. Everything points to the meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club on Saturday being a great success. Although acceptances do not close until 5 p.m. to-day it can be taken for certain that the response by owners will be generous. During the progress of the C.J.C. Metropolitan meeting the caretaker of -Addington, Mr. Coates, was taken seriously ill. His many friends w-ili be pleased to hear that he is making , a good recovery aud was able to leave his bed last week. ..It is the opinion of, those who have seen Machine Brick working .lately that ■the Australian pacer has improved considerably since he raced at the Metropolitan, meeting. He is expected to play a prominent .part in the .decision of the free-for-all at Forbury this week. Blair Audubon did ' not get in the money at the Otahuhu meeting, but he went, well enough to suggest that his turn is not far off when he encounters a moderate field. He is engaged at Hamilton on . Saturday, and if B. Edwards takes hinj to the", meeting he may be hard to beat. W. Orange is keeping his team going at Epsom, the most forward of which is Anoziram. Mutu is coming along nicely, .and will be ready before the season is much further advanced. Puduma is trying to make a comeback, but he is not a stayer,, and a mile is as far as ever he could go with the pace on. The American : bred mare Biddy Logan is stated to be doing well in her work at Christchurch. Subsequent to her arrival- in the Dominion she failed to show any form worth recording, and it was feared she would have to be , entered up with other failures imported from America. However, she is going better now, and may. yet make good. Now that R. Millen has won a race with: Lady Stepney it will be Wimmera King's -turn to win for the popular owner-trainer. Millen also has Marble Star, an .Australian-bred trotter .he purchased about a year ago, but so.far he has.not had any luck with this gelding. He was going along nicely some time back, but had the misfortune to injure a foot. However, he is again all right, and perhaps Millen will do. better with the gelding from now on., ' Word from ■ the south states that Minton Derby is amiss, and. it would appear that W. J. Tomkinson is not going to have an. easy time with the Australian pacer. When Minton Derby came over , from, Sydney a, couple of months .back- he clearly displayed signs of' unsoundness,' but. Tomkinson.' managed to keep him on'his legs'and win a race at- the Metropolitan meeting. With ,the tracks likely .to be .hard for so^ne.months the chances are againstan unsound horse standing a- preparation.
Toll- Chimes is one of those pacer 3 which consistently run well without getting the big end of the stake. The little Jewel Chimes gelding went a good race when he finished just behind the placed horses in the Mangere Handicap at Otahuhu, and if taken to the Waikato meeting should go well. Anselm, which possesses a good turn of speed, but which had not raced for a loug time prior to making his reappearance at Otahuhu, did not go at all solidly, and left his feet badly. He was always inclined to do this, and settled many good winning chances through this , fault. He goes pretty in saddle. When Black Pearl won at Te Aroha,' the daughter of Hal Zolock and Cast Pearl made an exhibition of the field, and if she could be induced to reproduce that run she would not be long in winning again. However, she is one of the worst in Auckland on the mark, and the odds are always against her starting right. i It is stated that the proposed visit ot the world's champion trotter, Peter Minning, to Australia and New Zealand, is off. This will come as no surprise, as there was hardly any likelihood of clubs in the Dominion financing the trip, when there were plenty of good stakes for the gelding to win if he could go the times credited to him. P. Riddle intends to give Snowshoe I one more chance to stand a solid pre- j paration. The pacer went wrong on the eve of the New Zealand Trotting Cup, but he is reported to have pulled round again. In the event of him j again going wrong lie will be returned to his owner, Mr. W. J. Carter, of Melbourne. The same gentleman owns the useful Orion. W. Wilson has made a great improvement in Delavan Bill in getting him to go away right, and each time at the Otahuhu meeting the gelding began well, particularly in the saddle race, when he was up nth the leader for half a mile, i He stopped then, but that would be '■ because' of condition, and he does not look right yet. Wilson is also putting useful work into ■ the trotter Locli Lomond, which he recently secured.
