POLICE COURT-

> (Before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.) A GREASER ASSAULTED. A coloured man, William Carter (35), pleaded not guilty when charged with assaulting James Malcolm on board the Corinthic yesterdny. Malcolm, a greaser on the vessel, said that about 4 p.m. he went to the forecastle. Accused was in his bunk. Somebody said something about the tea and sugar on the voyage out when accused advanced and struck witness, knocking him down. Witness said he did not offer any provocation to Carter, who was "fighting drunk." Another greaser gave similar evidence. Carter's explanation was that a general fight took place, and that he did not assault Malcolm. He was fined £2, or seven days' imprisonment, and was ordered to be kept in custody and to be placed on board the Corinthic when she leaves Auckland. QUITE ALL RIGHT AGAIN. "Are you quite all right again?" said the magistrate to Samuel llobert Prisk (51), who appeared for sentence on a charge of being found in a state of helpless drunkenness in St. Benedict Street. Prisk had been on a week's remand for medical treatment. Prisk, who replied that he was all right again, was ordered to pay £1 8/, the .expenses incurred. REMANDED FOR ONE WEEK. Ernest Cox (44), charged with stealing a watch and chain valued at £10, and ("Jeorge Bottles (21), who stood charged with receiving from Cox the watch and chain, were both remanded for one week, on the application of Chief Detective Cv mm ings. Bottles was allowed bail, in one surety of £50. A RACECOURSE TRESPASSER. '"The accused is excluded by regulations from attending race meetings owing to his having four previous convictions for theft," said Chief Detective Cummings about Arthur Notton (34), who appeared on summons charged with having trespassed on the Takapuna racecourse while a meeting was in progress on January 20, 1924. Mr. Hunt: The offences are pretty old. What sort of a man is he? Mr. CummiugS: He frequents racecourses more than he should, sir. Notton was given the opportunity of paying a fine of £10, or serving one month's imprisonment. »
