QUALIFYING FOR THE VOTE.
(It has been seriously suggested durine the present political campaign that no one should be allowed to vote unless he had first of all heard the candidates explain their political views.) "Come, mother, put the kettle on, and hurry up the spuds, ■Or you and I'll be ticketed as Just a pair of 'duds,' We're got to go and listen to what candidates may say, Or else we can't record our votes upon election day." "They've made It now compulsory that no elector polls Unless he's heard the aspirants expound their inmost souls, And so to-night I paid a quid for 'special early door,' So we can sit in comfort when Sir Jimmy takes the floor." "And don't forget your ticket, ma, to get his finger-print. Or else some scrutineer will drop the irritating hint, 'That If you'd heard the candidates you wouldn't play the goat And ask Returning Officers 'the proper way to vote.' " "We've got to cut out auction bridge—l see that sure as fate, And chase the speakers as they tour the whole electorate. Or else the Woouiin' ship of State is sure to spring a leak, Because vi-r- didn't fro and hear some silly bligliter speak." "So comp on, ma. we'll hurry out, the weather's not so bad, TVe'll have to take precautions that the speech won't drive us mad; We'll go to meetings and enjoy our franchise to the full, But don't you ever dare forget some plnga of. cotton wool."
