OVERCROWDING IN BUSES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In reply to Mr. Anderson, might I suggest that lie is unaware of the true position. He quotes City Council bylaws dealing with the trams re platform loading, and states that before the advent of buses the tramwaymen "rigidly" enforced the by-law. Such was not the case. I'll admit that the tramwaymen did endeavour to cope with the loading, but certainly not "rigidly." 1 will explain to Mr. Anderson why the tramwaymeii altered their procedure. We saw the buses not playing the game, such as stopping the bus in between intending paassengers and the tramcar, making the intending people walk round the bus to get the car, and when we saw the buses packed like sardines, did Mr. Anderson think we were going to look complacently on? Not likely! We said we can do the same, and now he protests. I would like to point out that if a tram is overloaded the driver is not impeded in his duties, but not so the bus driver. I should also like to refer Mr. Anderson to the fact that there is Government regulations dealing with tramway services throughout the Dominion, and if he has any spare time, instead of slating the Council, I suggest he draws up some working conditions for the busmen, similar to what the tramwaymen have, such as a six-day week, double-time Sunday, overtime after eight hours, annual holidays, uniform, etc. I should be pleased to forward a copy of our agreement if he would like one. —I am, etc.. A TRAMWAY EMPLOYEE.
