GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS.
THE LADIES' TOURNAMENT. JIB. GUY WILLIAMS BEATEN. (By Tele;rap:i.—l'ress A«?nriatiou.i WELLINGTON, Friday. The Now Zealand ladies' golf championship meeting t-omnieiiced to-day at Miramar in dull but warm and tine weather. The rain which yesterday necessitated the abandonment of the inter-Island match, left a record of its persistence in the stjte of the links, which were covered with large patches of water, especially at the further holes. The fairways were heavy, with the result that there was little run, resulting in a tendency to play short in approach work. The most serious trouble of all. and one that was the downfall of more than one player, was the fact that the bunkers were mostly filled, with water, necessitating lifting out with a penalty. The greens, on the other hand, were excellent, and most of the players putted well.
There were 56 entrants for the first round of tne championship, and although there was a little delay in starting the matches were got through in excellent time. The greater number of the matches finished early, being won by large margins on account of the condition of the links. The standard of polf in the morning was not high. As the day progressed, however, the links improved considerably, and better cards were returned in the afternoon bogey competition. The outstanding score of the day was that of Mrs. Guy Williams, who. after being beaten by Miss S. Payton. of Rotorua. in the championship, returned a card of 80 in the afternoon round, one under bogey tor the course. For the first 10 holes her card showed 2 under 48. the final holes taking 7 and G respectively, both holes being bogey 0. On seven of the greens one putt only was taken. First Round Results. Miss S. Payton's Victory. The sensation of the day was the defeat of Mrs. Williams in the first round, after winning both the Manawatu and Wanganui championships during the week. Mrs. Williams started off well, being two up at ; the third, .but Miss Payton, who was putting extraordinarily well, took the next three holes. The seventh and eighth were halved, and Mrs. Williams squared the game at the turn. Winning the tenth, she again took the lead, but Miss Payton squared at the next. Mrs. Williams took the short twelfth, after a perfect tee shot, in 3, tut Miss Payton. took the next with a good 5. The fourteenth was halved in 4. Mrs. Williams took the fifteenth in 5, but Miss Payton sank a 30ft putt at the sixteenth, again squaring the match. Miss Payton won the seventeenth in bogey G. Mrs. Williams hooked her iron shot wide of the green into the rough, and then found the bunker. Miss Payton again took a bogey G at the eighteenth, while Mrs. Williams had the bad luck to have to pick out of casual water in a bunker, taking a penalty and failing to even matters on the green, Miss Payton winning, to the excitement of the gallery. 2 up. The long game of neither player ■was up to form. Miss Gambrill was 2 up at the tenth, and increased her lead, coming back in bogey figures. The margin at the close was 3 and 2.
Miss Culling, Auckland, handled her clubs skilfully, and was'most effective in her short play. She was too consistent tor Miss Ockenden, Dannevirke, and took tiie match by the wide margin of 6 and a. Miss Marjorie Macfarlane played well, hut struck a strong opponent in Miss D. Chrystall, Christchurch, who was driving well. The Auckland lady had to submit to defeat, 2 down.
