At Ellerslie this morning Irish. Jig (S. Henderson) cleared four hurdles well, and Miss Lucca (McMullen) got over six safely. It is stated that the Wanganui Trotting flub will probably include two galloping events on the programme each day of its annual fixture. The Aucklanif Racing Club has received excellent entries for its spring and summer meetings and the racing snould be well up to the high standard seen at these fixtures previously. ( Star Ranger, which won the Avondale Cup, is engaged in the New Zealand Gup, and has also been accorded a nomination in "the Mitehelson Cup which is run at the same time. Nigger Minstrel is top weight in the Shorts Handicap, the principal event on the first day of the Wellington meeting, while on the second day he is entered for the Champion Plate. Te Kara has 9.1 in the Wellington .Handicap and this good stayer is bound to make his presence felt if he faces the barrier. Gold Light, Rapine and Tanadees will be his chief rivals. Ring the Bell has been accorded a nomination in the Auckland Cup. This Colt, which is a member of J. T. Jamieson's team, and has so far only been over short courses. He has some pace. Te Kara and Muraahi, who deadheated in the Auckland Cup in 1923 are enfiaged in the forthcoming race. Te Kara won last year, and besides these two another winner of the race, Malaga, is also nominated. •There are thirty-one engaged in the Mitehelson Cup but the great majority of them hail from Auckland and the Wai'kato. However, there are some good ones from outside, including Income, Wuraalii, Suggestion, Tanadees and The Banker. • Gold Light still stands her ground in the Wellington Handicap to be run at Trentham next Saturday, and if at her best she will take some beating. ■ She was just defeated by a head by Musketoon in this event last year and her weight on this occasion is only lib. more. There are 5S engaged in the Auckland Cup and though a large number will drop out between this and Boxing Day, still there is plenty of material for a good race. Several South Mand horses are engaged, including Listening Post, Mala gai Count Cavour, and Centrepiece. _ Matters were fairly quiet at Ellerslie ( ttis morning only the sand and tan "tracks being available owing to the recent fTain. Gala Day and Boomerday did a round of the sand together and finished on terms. Joy Ride, which won at Avon'oale recently, beat Tactician and Merry Damon in a sprint, while Royal Present and Polonett completed their work by running home from the seven furlong Post. Musketoon was sprinted with ■drawbridge, and later by himself over a lew furlongs, and moved along all right.

Price will forego his engagement in the Waikato Hunt Cup Steeplechase, and race at Waverley on Labour Day. Miss Vera is the latest addition to F. Tutehen's team. The All Black-Jena mare will shortly he working again at Tβ Kapa. Handicaps for the second day of the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting are due on Monday, and acceptances close the same day at 5 p.m. Rahepoto, which has been working at To Awamutu this season, will bo in good form when he fulfils his engagement at the Waikato Hunt meeting. This hack showed promise last season. Royal Abbey has only to be produced in the right order to give a good account of himself in jumping events at To Kapa on Labour Day. The Waikatoowned guiding has been accorded a solid preparation lately. Malaga has not come on as well as was expected, in view of his form early in the season, and unless he can improve on his Wingatui efforts, he can be dismissed from calculations for important spring events. Matinee will be a starter at the Wnilcato Hunt meeting. The Day Comet horse has been working regularly at Te Rapa. lie has raced well at times on this course, but the going will hardly, be Him enough yet for him. Early backers on the New Zealand Trotting Cup will not be pleased to know that the favourite, l'edro Pronto v is amiss, and it is considered that there is very little chance of him starting in the big race next month at Addington. Bevis was taken to the Carterton meeting, and will also race at Trcntham. Phil. Brady has 'been training the Elysian gelding at Te Kapa this season. Bevis is a useful sort, and should win some more money in hack company this season. King's Guard, another of R. Hannon'g big team, is credited with being a promising recruit to the jumping game. It has also to be remembered tlrat he can muster up a good turn of speed on the flat, and if he lines up at To Rapa on Labour Day he will carry some favour. Lady Gwendoline, the dam of Bright Day.and Curraglimore, has been mated with the Martian*horse, Raceful, which is doing stud duty in the Waikato. Lady Gwendoline previously produced a foal to this sire, but the youngster, unfortunately, ended its career by getting into a ditch and breaking its leg. Monday, which has been a big disappointment so far, having failed to win a race, continues to work well on the tracks~at Claudelands in view of his Labour Day engagement. The Day Comet-Monoline gelding does well in private, but, so far, has .failed to run up to his 'best promise when the serious business is sought. Paddon, which was brought to Avondale but did not race, may not be a starter at Te Rapa on Labour Day. This is the promising half-brother, by Archiestoun to the useful White Comet, which is also to race for his breeder, Mr. George Seifert. He has just got over teeth trouble, while the weather has also been against his preparation latterly. The Champion Plate, to be run at the Wellington spring meeting, lias attracted a field of nine, and it should result in a very line race. Gold Light won the even last year, but if those nominated go to the post next Monday week, she will have a much harder task in front of her. Nigger Minstrel, Runnymede, Te Kara, Rapine and Royal Divorce will all have friends. The Sydney trainer, G. Price, told a pressman that Windbag can be ridden with a thread of cotton, go anywhere, and will run along at any pace that hia rider desires. He still hits the ground hard in front, and, ne usual, ran in bandages. As a two-year-old his tendons were inclined to give trouble, and even now precaution is taken with his forelegs. At Wanganui on Tuesday morning Dubious (E. Keesing) and Royal Divorce (J. Barry) were galloped a mile. After doing the first furlong at a moderate speed, the pace was clapped on, and the first half was done in 51 2-ss, six furlongs fh lm 17js. and the full journey in lm 44 1-os, Royal Divorce drawing out a length or so at the finish. The two two-year-olds, Lysander and Kiosk, were companions over three furlongs, and they ran the distance in 37 1-os! Lysander had his neck in front at the end, but Kiosk was going along nicely. Santiago was sent a mile by himself, and got through his task in l m 50 s ' Fool's Paradise and Black Cat left half a mile behind in 49 3-ss, both hitting out freely ■ * A trio of the latest horses which are expected to shortly receive shipping orders for New Zealand are Machine Brick, Auto Machine, and Flying Machine. The two latter are by Machine Brick. The mention of a stallion doing stud duty before his racing days are over is totally opposed to all ideas of trainers of thoroughbreds, but many of the best trotting stallions have put up their best times after years at the stud. These include Happy Voyage, Globe Derby, Machine brick, Denver Huon, Grand Voyage, Emulator, Rock Huon, Van Roy, Winn Alto, Harry Alto, Derby Chimes, and many others. Auto Machine, who is looked upon as one of the most promising young horses in sight should do well hi the Dominion. There will be plenty of stake-money to be raced for in Ne\v Zealand before the end of the year. The October meeting of the Auckland Trotting Glub will carry £7000, and the £3000 Cup meeting of the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club in November will carry £14.700. Among the high-class Australian-bred horses now racing in New Zealand may be mentioned Realm (Ribbonwood —Levuka). Sheik (Bonnie Chief—Franeesca), Roicole (late King's Pride) (King Cole — Emily P.), Pedro Pronto (Don Pronto —Doris M.), Pearlie Chimes (Derby Chimes —Pearly Huon), Delavan Quest (Delavan Chimes —May Highwood), Bicolour (Mamrbrino Derby—Doris). Billy Sea (William C. —Rock Huon mare), Mountain King (Ribbonwood —Donesse), Snowshoe (Ostia —Rosebud), Don Wild (Don Pronto—Wild Duck), Escourt (Yon Osterley —Portsea mare), Stroller (Don Pronto— Wild Duck), Kissing Cup (Golden Bobbie—Patience). Musketoon is a notable defection from i the Wellington Handicap, but with 9.2 | he was not given much of an invitation. He is among those engaged in the New Zealand L'up, in which he ran third to : Sunart and Gold Light last year. Wanderer and Seabrook are two hacks engaged at the Waikato Hunt Club fixture, which are trained at Te Kapa. They are both big, upstanding sorts, which trainer Tutchen has been giving a fair measure of attention to lately. ; I Arsene Lupin is to keep his engage- ! ment in the Hunters' Hurdles at the i Waikato Hunt Club's fixture. He went , well into second place at the Paku- , ranga fixture and was third on the i second day at Avondale, although in { between he failed when expected to wiu : at Feilding. This jumper is trained at I To Kapa. Athcnry, which was turned out in the I Helensville district during the winter, Iras been returned to Te Kapa and is again being trained there by M. J. Carroll. Athenry is a chestnut descendant of MuUiugar and Marie O' Dile, which won at Taumarunui in December and paid upwards of a quarter of a century. As he is only a four-year-old there is ample time 'for him. Adrienne is to be a starter in the big steeplechase at the Waiknto Hunt fixture, which event she won last season on a very light preparation. The Advance mare has been up some time, and according to reports from her southern headquarters, she is doing everything asked of her, so must be given a chance to repeat the performance. Hcialer ran second to Dan Quin in the Instow Handicap at the Waikato Hunt fixture last season. The Lord Multifid gelding will l|p on hand for the event on Labour Day and has been given a preparation which should land him at the post in good order. Heisler's trouble is that he stops very quickly over the last piece. White Comet is an unlikely starter in the New Zealand Cup. 'The Day Comet gelding has shown no ill-effects j of his fall in the big race at Avondale ' and continues to work well at Claudelands. He will be started with the sprinters at the Waikato- Hunt meeting and will also race at the same centre in November. King Merv has- thrown off the effects of the shoulder soreness which the Quin Abbey sprinter developed just prior to the Avondale meeting. Quinette, another of the short distance performers in M. J. Carroll's team at Te Kapa,-is also in good heart. She will start in the Instow Handicap at the Labour Day fixture at Hamilton, and on Avondale form may have to be reckoned with under her light impost. The steeplechase country at Te Rapa will be of the nature to thoroughly test the qualifications of the candidates listed for cross-country engagements. The executive of the Waikato Racing Club, the owners of the property, have secured information from Christchureh and the Kiccarton plan is to be followed to a. large extent in the lay-out and nature of the big jumps. Although several offers of sires have been made, the Auckland Country Racing Clubs' Breeders' Association is to j take no action to replace Archiestown | in the meantime. They will carry on with Day Comet for the present season and set inquiries afoot with the object, most likely, of securing a thoroughbred sire from England for next season. Report* from Te Aroha, where Multini is trained, indicate that the Lord Multifid—Penthesilia mare is making a very satisfactory showing as a hurdler. She is somewhat wayward at the barrier, but her pace, combined with jumping ability, will make her useful when she tackles the jumping business in earnest. F. Tutchen has three hurdlers, Prince Rufus, Peter Maxwell and Kawa among his fair-sized team in training at Te j Rapa and should gather some money at , this branch of the business this season. , The trio are in good fettle, especially i the veteran Prince Rufus, which now races in the interests of Mr. W. H. ' Wackrow. Whetunui, which sustained some kind of muscle-binding soreness in the forequarters earlier in the season, has ' thrown off the ill-effects much more ' quickly than her trainer anticipated, i and is again to be seen on the tracks I at «Te Rapa. A full sister to Whetu- i mil, which is also to race under the '■ colours of the Tc Kuiti sportsman Mr H. Rothery, has joined the same team! She is a well set up customer, and a good mover in her work. One of the most disappointing of the Te Rapa trained candidates last season was Miss Ford, which was backed and i beaten more than once. The Day I Comet— Wenona mare shows ability in I her training, but is a bit cranky in her I ways and has lost valuable ground in I the early stages of her races in the ! past. Miss Ford, which is to line-up I on Labour Day, may not be over lon'r in making amends. ° A lot of people )are wondering how -Tinopono will come up for the new season. This member of R. Hannon's Cambridge team did not race last term I but reports state that he is again shaping well. Forfeits fell due for the Welcome Stakes and Great Northern Guineas and nominations closed for the other events of the spring programme nnd also for leading events set down for decision at the summer meeting. All round the entries are of a very satisfactory character and augur well for Ellerslie gatherings holding the high position to which they have attained.
