MEETING OF CITY COUJTCH.. BEQUEST TO THE CITY. " The Auckland City Council met last nleht when there were present: The Mayor (Mr. Geo Baildon) Miss E. Melville, Messrs A J. Entrican, J. Donald, M. J. Coyle B J Phelan. A. Thompson, J. B. Paterson, J. W Hardley. G. Knight, S. I. Crookes, J A c' Alhrm, .r. Dempsey, F. W. H. Brinsden, G Brownlee, L. A. Eady, C. P. Bennett, J W Court and J. A. Including two bridges within the boundaries of the town district, a length of 154 chains It was reported by the city engineer that the council was already contributing toward c G^, at North Ro "d. which ran through blen Eden district and gave access to the cemetery.

The City Librarian reported that twenty one volumes of general literature were presented to the Library from the estate of the late Dr. T. W. Leys. Mr. W. Cecil Leys donated five volumes of general literature and eighteen novels. D.S.C. and Cousins and Cousins, Ltd, wrote asking that parking in Kitchener street be prohibited, the street being only twenty-two feet wide, access to their premises being often difficult. The Chief Traffic Inspector reported that despite the tact that there was a parking prohibited disc placed in the area for the guidance of motorists, vehicles were left standing in proximity to several manufacturing estnblshmenta throughout the day, thereby causing congestion. Apart from the inconvenience to the business community caused by the parking of cars in this locality, in the event of fire, it would be difficult for the brigade to get to the fire expedltiouslv if the roadway was narrowed by parked cars. Kitchener Street was not a prohibited parking area, but it was apparent that that portion of the street to the east of the intersection of Courthouse Lane should be included in the prohibited parking areas.—The matter was referred to the . Works Committee. The City Engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush) submitted progress reports in connection with the street works being carried out in the city. Progress had been well maintained in connection with the Streets Improvement Loan, 1925, as shown under the heading of the different districts, but it was interesting to note that up to the present time since work was started in January, over 80.000 feet of kerbine and channelling hart been laid in streets ■ distributed principally ns follows — I'nrnoll, 4795 lineal feet ; Arch Hill, 2}fi.'i • limy Lynn. f>S44 ; Remuera, 35,403 • Erti-n CbSr, \f&. F ' PSOU1 ' 23 ' 700: ' ™°* The Town Clerk reported thnt under the provisions of the will of the late \lexander It. D. Watson, the council receives one-twenty-sixth of the income from resi■inary estate for the following purposes: Purchnse of public etntuary for the City of Auckland, nnd to the Auckland Public Picture Gallery or body controlling same. Two payment of £200 respectively had to date been made, and the council accordingly had in hand £800, £400 for each respective purpose. He recommended that these moneys be dissociated from the ordinary revenue and invested in suitable form until a sufficient fund has accumulated to enable the purchase of works of undoubted merit.—This was adopted.
