NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Xe-wmarket Borough Council met last evening , . Present: The Mayor ('Mr 6 Donaldson), and Messrs. V J CM earn C R. Wilson. G. Hardley, T. X. Sampson.' A. Kent, G. E. Smerdon and X. Kelleway. The Mayor was appointed to ant as delegate for the council at the Municipal Associations" Conference, to tie held at Dunedin in Fi?bruary next. It was decided to support the Chrislchurch City Council in opposing the proposal recently made foy the Prime Minister regarding the constitution of a Local Government -Board, to which all applications for loans by local bodies will be referred to determine whether the proposals fo; - ---which the power to raise money is beius asked, are in the best interests of the community. The sanitary inspector was granted leave of absence to attend the annual meeting of sanitary inspectors at Dunedin during th« second week of February next. The engineer reported that the preliminary plans for the Victoria Crescent overbridge had been completed, and that detailed estimates were available for discussion at the nest meeting at the Streets Committee. Three tenders for the supply of one clock for the front of the Municipal Buildings and four clocks for the interior, in accordance with the plan and specification were received. The lowest tender of £349 was accepted. A comprehensive report dealing with the financial operations for the six months ended September 30 was submitted toy the treasurer. The amount of revenue received during the period was £5220. This figure represented 22.07 per cent of the total estimate for the year. The expenditure over the same period amounted to £9171, or 38.91 per cent of the total estimate. Indications were that the sum of £OS3 would be required in addition to that provided in the year's estimates. The latter excess was fairly substantial, and although the resources of the council had in past years proved equal to meeting more serious problems, it would probably be found necessary to proceed very carefully in the matter of finance during the remainder of the year. In connection with street loan 'No. 5, the report stated that It would be necessary to take advantage of the Act permitting >the raising of an extra 10 per cent.
