•. (To the Editor.) '£=jSir, —With reference to an article ranith appeared in your paper on -{September 1, headed "Timber Tree -Slanting," by Arthur Sainsbury, this -.service cannot agree with this gentleman ..in' - , his derogatory remarks concerning ;gnftUs insignis. While certainly Insignis ;J?ine is not equal to such splendid -timbers for special purposes, such as 'Bed wood, Douglas Fir, and Ponderosa ;.";£?&ie. it, has a very definite value and , r Ji& for general rough constructional ;rjHirpnses, case timber, and a variety of ;=4nflustrial uses in New Zealand and Anstralia. I know and have seen many "-buildings in New Zealand which are up .__._.' a generation in age, which have been ."built of Insignis Pine, and are just as good to-day as the day they were built. I might say this service has carefully studied this timber, and has subjected it to the usual strict engineering tests; and authoritative date relative to this species, developed from the silvicultural and Technological side, is now in the hands of ;the Government printer, and will shortly >W made available for general distribuijion.—l am, etc., IjFjj L.
