MOTORING MATTERS.

MEETING OF A.A.A. QUESTION OF BAD ROADS. The council of the Auckland Automobile Association met last evening, Mr. J. A. Warnock being in the chair. According to the service officer's report the Great South Road between Taupiri and Ngaruawahia was in a shocking condition. Several members said that this was the most neglected section of the Great South Road. It was decided to request the Main Highways Board to give immediate attention to the route. The council unanimously decided to approve of the proposal to lay the tenmile stretch from Otahuhu to Papakura in concrete, in preference to bitumen. Advice was received from the Rodney County Council that it was impossible to guarantee anything but a summer road between Waiwera and Warkworth. In a letter the Main Highways Board stated that it was hoped to complete the pregrammo for the Mamuku Bush Road next year. The work which was proceeding would place the road in fair order by next winter. The sum of £7500 had been allocated for improvements during the current year. A member of the Automobile Association residing at Rotorua complained that the Main South Road outside Rotorua was, in some parts, absolutely impassable. The road skirts the State Forest Reserve for the major portion to TVaiotapu, and the County Council only had one ratepayer in the 21-mile length. This stile ratepayer contributed between £10 and £20; all the rest of the road, being State owned, contributed nothing. Members thought that some drastic action should be taken. With the elections no near, now , was the time to urge the Government to do something to improve the disgraceful state of this road, said one member. It was resolved to write to the Minister of Puhlic Works, urg-ing him to see that the road was placed in order. The Highways Board expressed the opinion that the traffic requirements did not warrant the construction of the road from Hamilton to Cambridge in concrete, as proposed by the Cambridge Road Board.
