HON. McLEOD EXPLAINS, "j _ (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ' , DUNEDIN, this day. ! At Waikouaiti last night the Hon. A. D. MeLeod, Minister of Lands, addressed a meeting of electors of Waitaki electorate. He dealt with the attack made on him by a Christchurch paper, which said he owned 35,000 acre*, whereas the fact was that he, as ona of six sons of an early settler of the Dominion, owned less than 1600, acres, while his wife held 1000 acres. "."'.'"' Touching on fusion he said it w?s not the job of oO or 60 members to bargain behind closed doors as to what should or should not be done; that was the job of the electors. He supported the action of the Government in purchasing improved lands for soldiers, and said that the scheme w__ supported by members of the Nationalist party, who now condemned the Government for losses incurred hy the country in that respect. He defended the increased expenditure of the Government on housing, land settlement, purchase of native ' land, discharged soldiers, and other objects. A vote of thanks was accorded the Minister for his address, and the meeting expressed confidence in the Government.
