The acting- Government statistician (Mr. t Waltes) lias received particulars relating to the areas sown with wheat during , the current season, and the following estimate has been based upon reports received from wheat growers throughout the State. The total area sown was I 3 686,700 acres, or Which it is stated by '.growers 3,327,300 acres are to be har- * vested Tor graincand 359,400 acres cut ■\s compared with the area sown in 1924, there was a decrease of 261,980 I acres, or 6.6 per cent. The area to be reserved for grain is 316.560 acres less than was harvested in the preceding- year, but Is, with the j exception of 1023-4, the largest area for grain since 1917-18, when 3,329,371 acres were harvested. Ail the divisions in the State, with the exception of the North Gentral Plain, showed decreased areas under wheat. According , to reports, this was clue to the unfavourable season, and, to sdine extent, to the substitution of sheep for wheat, owing to the high prices obtained Tor wool.
