A LIVELY MEETING.
MR. OLDFIELD HECKLED. Mr. S. Oldfield, Reform candidate for Auckland West, confined the greater part of his address last night at Ponsonby to an attack on the Labour party, which brought upon him the resentment of many in the hall. "All this," said the candidate, "tells mc that the Labour party in Auckland West has the wind up. I heard the other day that Labour was squealing all over the electorate —now I know it." A section of the audience then gave three frantic cheers for Mr. Savage. This was followed by a counter-blast for Mr. Oldfield. "Sit down," demanded an elector of Mr. E. A. Perkins, the chairman, who was on his feet, trying to command order. "Sit down—you're not selling poultry now. (Laughter.) A section of the people, declared the candidate, when he could make himself heard, were out to destroy law and order, whereupon there was a perfect uproar. "Sob stuff!" ejaculated an elector when the candidate alleged that agnosticism was being taught in Socialistic Sunday schools. Mr. Oldfield said he whole-heartedly supported Mr. Coates, who was for law and order against the attacks of the revolutionary Socialists. "I'd be glad if someone would tell mc who is the gentleman who is making that noise," said the chairman, indicating a persistent interject.r. "Troteky," called a voice, and there followed a long spell of uproarious laughter. At the conclusion of the meeting cheers were given for both Mr. Oldfield and Mr. Savage.
