MAD WOMAN'S ACT.
ATTACK ON HER CHILDREN. SAD N.S.W. CASE. SYDNEY, October 13. A dreadful domestic tragedy occurred at Newcastle. Mrs. Cheltham, while in a state of dementia, attacked with an axe three of her children, whose ages range from nine months to seven years. All three were terribly injured. They were taken to a hospital in a serious condition. The police took charge of the mother. Two elder children escaped and alarmed the neighbours.—(A. and N.Z.) THE 'BABY DIESOTHERS MAY DIE TOO. (Received 11 n.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The' Cheetham baby, aged six months, has died," and the others are not expected to recover. The mother is Nellie Cheetham, aged 34 years. It appears the Cheethams failed in a small business which they conducted. This preyed on the mother's mind. Tlie day before the tragedy she visited tho police station in a very agitated state, and asked whether she could be proceeded against for failing in (business.
The husband was sent for and had her examined by a mental specialist. The latter, however, decided it was not necessary for her to be kept under restraint. (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
