ANTI-NAVY NONSENSE.

The Labour party professes to be very angry when its attitude to the British Empire is criticised. It may be that an injustice has been done to it, but so long as member talk such dangerous rubbish as Mr. Bartram did in his opening address last night, voters outside the party are justified in being suspicious. According to Mr. Bartram the visits of the British and American Fleets to the Dominions were part of an international propaganda to foster the war spirit in order to bolster up a decadent capitalism. This may sound impressive to the pure Marxian, but it is sad nonsense. Does Mr. Bartram disapprove entirely of naval defence? I n the present imperfect state of the world how does he propose to ensure the safety of the Empire without a navy? Mr. Bartram might be grateful to the British Navy, if not for helping to defeat the Germans, then at least for making it possible for him to be a member of Parliament in a self-governing Do-

minion. Also, may we point out to Mr. Bartram that the Labour Government in Britain added to the Navy? Was this done to foster the war spirit and bolster up a decadent capitalism?
