PIG BREEDING.
As with other classes of stock, a variety of feeds is better than a diet composed mainly of one or two feeds. Pigs require a more concentrated diet than is required by other farm animals. Their main requirements are grain feed, green feed, animal protein in some form, such as meat meal, salt, charcoal, and wood ashes, or lime and bone meal in place of wood ashes, and fresh water twice daily, or in continuous supply., Legume hay of good quality may economically take the place of some of ,the high-protein concentrates of the ration. Good pasturage may take the place of half the concentrates, more or less, excepting during tho finishing period, and for sows that are nearing farrowing time, when more concentrated rations are given. The relative values of cereal grains and other foods for pig feeding are indicated by the following figures: — 100 lb. malze=Coo green lucerne. 91 11). wheat«*lGo lucerne buy. 10:1 lb. barley=(HJs mangels. 100 lb. peas="2l carrots. 118 11). oats=G(s3 green clover. 300 lb. potatoes=sso skim milk.
