Markham £v&7 of^ the General fwos Wellington. He wrote that it was impossible to state the earliest date on which it would be possible to establish an automatic telephone exchange at Birkenhead. Mr. E. W. B. Herrick said this was not in accord with the promise of Sir James Parr to the deputation last June. Mr. F. J. Maxwell said the deputation felt there was little use canvassing the districts for new subscribers unless a guarantee could be given when the toll charges would be abolished. Mr. C. A. Clark: No —quite a number might be dead by then! This is quite a "Kathleen Mavourneen" affair!. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr. C. A.Deuxberry, the communication was referred to Mr. A. Harris, M.P.
