AUCKLAND.
PROPHECIES FULFILLED.
The souvenir programme issued in connection with the sitting of the 43rd annual assembly of the New Zealand Baptist Union, has in it a page instructing visiting delegates regarding the places worth seeing during their sojourn here. Another interesting page is the one head, "Auckland as seen through other eyes." This starts with the quotation from Tom Bracken:— "Oh, lovely city of the sunny Isles; Be proud .to-day, and wear the gladdest smiles, - Thou hast a glory which Is all thine own." Then follows the following words by Sir George Grey:— "Citizens of- Auckland, you are amongst the heralds that introduce and the rulers that must guide and direct a new age, and who must establish an, as yet, unknown nation.'* , ' And lastly the prophecy toy Sir John Gorst:— "Though the population is no doubt destined to increase enormously, Auckland will remain whst it is npw, a .beautiful garden, city. , ' Two small pictures are also given of Auckland in 1850 and another of the city of to-day. The latter shows the wonderful progress made in the 85 years since Governor William Hobson selected the banks of the Wai tenia ta as the site of the capital of New Zealand. The grave of the founder of Auckland is in Symonds Street Cemetery.
