PROBATION REFUSED.
THEFT FROM HOTEL.
A SEAMAN SENTENCED.
A seaman named James Spence f36! appeared before the Police Court this morning, when he pleaded guilty to stealing £4 in money, and jewellery valued at £14 5/. the property of Carrie Paula Meaner: also to three charges of stealing clothing valued at £10 15/. Detective E. Barling said that accused had been drinking with another man in the Britomart Hotel, and had gone upstairs to one of the bedrooms, where he stole the money and jewellery. The next day he got his mate to take the jewellery into "a pawnshop. Alb the property had been recovered, but the £4 had* been spent. In answer to Mr. Blakev. who appeared for accused, the detective admitted that accused had been drinking lately, although he was not drunk when he committed the offence. -Mr. Blakev said that Spence bad never been before the Court before. He had been drinking rather heavily. If <*iven the benefit of probation, accused would return to work immediately and > make restitution.
Mr. Poynton: The Bench does not think.that this is a case for probation; it might only set others a bad example. Accused will be sentenced to three months' imprisonment on one charge, and convicted and - ordered to come up lor sentence within six months .on another.
