RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.
AUCKLAND'S CANDIDATE. MR. A. J. GRAY CHOSEN. i Mr. Arthur James Gray, M.A., has been selected by the Professorial Board as the Auckland candidate for the Rhodes scholarship. For the past six or seven years a popular figure in academic and social life at the Arickland University College, Mr. Gray has also taken an active, part in outdoor sports, in football, cricket and hockey. Now 23 years of age, Mr. Gray, who is an Aucklander by birth; is a member of the staff of the Mount Albert Grammar School. He took his bachelor's degree in arts in 1921 and two years later graduated M.A With second-Class honours in English. His primary school education he gained at Otahuhu and Remuera, going from Remuera to the Auckland Grammar School in 1914 as a Junior National scholar. In 1918 he won a Junior University scholarship, but resigned this in favour of teaching. For two years he was a pupil teacher at Ellerslie School and was afterwards a student of the Training College from 1920 to 1922. He joined the Staff of the Remuera School in 1923, and this year obtaihed a position as master on the Mt. Albert Grammar School staff.
Meanwhile Mr. Gray has continued to take an active interest in college life. He as been a member of many students' societies, edited the "Kiwi," the dollege magazine, in 1923, and last year was president of the Students' Association. At the training college he was also a leading figure in social life. In the University Football Club he has been a member of a number of junior Rugby teams, and during the present season obtained several games in the senior fifteen. His other sports are hockey, cricket, rowing and tennis.
