£1000 A YEAR AND THE DOLE.
' " AX ABSURDITY THAT THE LAW ■ PERMITS. I Xew light was thrown on the dole l scandal by a summons which was heard at Tower Bridge Police Court, when Francis Freeman, of Kotherhithe, was charged *"ita > making false representations. I It appeared that Freeman was a grocer, with a business of his own, "Freeman's i Stores." Notwithstanding this fact, he not • only applied for the dole on his own behnir, , but signed an application in his wife's name . in order to procure the , dole for her and , also for his two children. He represented himself in this appllcai tion as "a motor driver unable to obtain . work," but he admitted in court that he ; had done no motor dririug since 1921. The magistrate (Mr., Tassell): Surely a ( man with a business of his own is not entitled to draw the dole ? [ Mr. Pratt (for the Ministry of Labour): . Yes, if he works at some other occupation. Mr. Tassell: Then a man making £10uu . a year in a business under management could draw the dole if he was a motor driver out of a place ? Mr. Pratt: I am afraid so. Freeman was sentenced to a month's imrri.~onruent on each of thp c-harges, tne sentences to run concurrently. -
