DISABLED SOLDIERS.

> REPORT OF THE BOARD. WHERE THE MONEY GOES. Since the inception of the permanently disabled soldiers' scheme, inaugurated by the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association, 480 men have been voted assistance amounting to £97,593—an average of £203 per man. The assistance granted has been mainly in helping men to acquire homes, and, according to a report received by the executive committee, the scheme has proved of great assistance to the class of soldier it was designed for, namely, soldiers who are suffering permanent war disability to the extent of 40 per cent upwards. It is anticipated that a large number of men who have not yet applied for assistance will probably do so at some later date. Grantees under the scheme are , all cases of severe permanent war disability, whose condition after medical examination and full investigation by the board, has been established as arising from war service. The mortgages for the grants made .during the first nine months of the scheme have now run their course of five years. Under the terms of the mortgage the committee is discharging cases where the grantees have complied with the various conditions of the mortgages. It has been found that the scheme inaugurated'almost six years ago has been a success. The early mortgages were for a term of five years, but later ones are for a term of 10 years. Where necessary a grantee is permitted to sell his home conditionally noon the association receiving a refund of the amount of its mortgage. The amount is then re-voted to the grantee on any property he purchases that meets with the approval of the board.
