PEOPLE OF ITALY.
STEADY INCREASE RECORDED. (Received ii a.m.) ROME, September 4. Census returns for Sicily for 1924 show that 16 sets of quadruplets, 104 sets of triplets, and 610 sets of twins wore born. The population of Italy increased by ba-lf-a-million during the year. Sicily provided the highest percentage.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.) Tlie pqputytion of Italy at last census was 39,(550,094, a steady increase since 1816 (18,383,000), the first year in which a real attempt was made to number the people. The increase mentioned in the cablegram is probably the national increase. The United States used to assimilate yearly very large numbers of Italians of the peasant class, who are the best (and strongest) labourers in Europe. The United States, fearing overpopulation of other elements than AngloSaxons, has so reduced the proportions of European people admitted that thousands of Italians who might have migrated have stayed at home.
