WELLINGTON WAR MEMORIAL.
THE CARILLON PROJECT.
ANOTHER £10,000 WANTED.
(Cy Telpsrrnpli.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday
The proposal to instal a carillon #of bells as a war memorial was not adopted, but the mutter may be reintroduced. It was estimated that at least £20/)00 would be required for the erection of a suitable campanile in Wellington of 100 ft. in height. The amount subscribed, £20.780. might provide a campanile but not also a grand carillon, for which more money would have ( to be raised.
Reporting on the matter a committee set up for the purpose summarises its conclusions as follows: —(1) That a suitable campanile with a first-class set of bells -would cost from £28,000 to £30,000;, (2)., that there is no reason why » campanile should not be equal in dignity and grandeur to any other-form of symbolical memorial; (3) that the people of Wellington, would possess a double source of inspiration in a silent edifice and living bells; (4) that the music of the bells would inspire future generations long after a purely silent symbolical- memorial had ceased to lie of outstanding interest; (."») that the bells would be a living inspiring memorial ringing out their message To people for all time.
Dr. Marsden reports favourably on the proposal and suggests a sheltered site on the college side of the Basin Reserve. He emphasises the future importance of broadcasting and says that in moderate wind the chimes coiild be repeated in any part of the town or country through suitable loud speakers. Thus the memorial might serve the whole Dominion. He was lookinw ahead five years. A listener did not necessarily require to actually see the bells to appreciate their music.
