AGE OF CONSENT.
AMENDMENTS TO MARRIAGE LAWS. WOMEN'S COUNCIL RESOLUTION'S. (By Telegraph.—Own correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. The existing laws of marriage, which allow a girl to enter the state of matrimony upon attaining the age of 12, were severely criticised by several members at the Women's Conference in Hamilton yesterday. One member remarked, however, that if the legislation was amended as suggested it would prevent a young girl who had been in trouble from legitimating her baby by marriage. It was pointed out, however, that a marriage several years later would still give the baby a name.
The conference unanimously decided to recommend an amendment hi the marriage laws of the Dominion, raising the age of competence to marry to 16 years for both girls and boys.
Another remit agreed to was that the age limit for commitment of girle to State control be raised to IS years, while the perennial "chestnut," "that the a<*e of consent be raised from 16 to Is years," was passed without discussion.
