GIRLS AND BOYS.
PROPORTIONS IN FAMILIES.
A STATISTICIAN'S STUDY. POPULATION OF AUSTRALIA. (By Cable.—'Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Addressing the Royal Society, Sir George Knibbs (Commonwealth Statistician), dealing with the sex problem, said that births in all Western European countries showed an excess of. males over females. In Australia the proportion of females increased with the size of the family. In families of from one to three children there were 391 more boys than girls per 10.000 children.
In families up to five there were 317 more; up to nine, 246 more; and up to 12. 233.
English observations showed a marked falling off in males as families increased from two to eight children. The annual report of the Commonwealth Statistician shows that in ten years from the beginning of 1915 Australia's population increased by 901,725, an average increase of 1.68 per cent; 87 per cent total increase due to excess of birth over deaths, and 13 per cent to immigration. Under existing conditions he estimates the population of the Commonwealth will reach 6.000.000 by the end of 1925.—(A. and K\Z. Cable.)
